Access Facts Card Deck

The Access suit is one of four suits in the GuideBox to Healthy Places Card Deck. It contains 13 cards exploring how accessibility, mobility, walkability, and transportation infrastructure shape the health of communities. Each card pairs a compelling image with facts and context that can spark conversations at community meetings, workshops, or professional gatherings.

About the Access Suit

Accessibility is a cornerstone of healthy community design. When residents can walk, bike, or take transit to reach daily destinations — grocery stores, schools, healthcare, workplaces, parks — they are more physically active, less isolated, and less dependent on automobile travel. The design of streets, sidewalks, transit systems, and land use patterns directly determines whether a community supports or undermines these health outcomes.

The Access cards highlight the relationship between transportation infrastructure and public health through data-driven facts and real-world examples. Topics include pedestrian safety, transit access and equity, the built environment's role in physical activity, and the relationship between street design and community wellbeing.

How to Use the Card Deck

The Access Card Deck is available in two formats: an interactive online version designed for screen display or projection, and a printable version with fold lines for creating physical cards. Both versions contain identical content. Begin with the Card Deck Directions, available through the full GuideBox, which provides an introduction to the deck and guidance on how to facilitate discussions using the cards.

Cards can be used individually to focus a discussion on a specific health topic, or in combination with the other three suits for a comprehensive examination of community health factors. The Access suit works particularly well alongside the Equity suit, as transportation access and equity are closely interconnected.
